From my perspective, using an object to try to do harm is sufficient to qualify the object as a weapon under the normal usage of the word "weapon", and the rules don't specify a different definition. No DEX to damage, no proficiency (unless Tavern Brawler), no Sharpshooter or Archery Fighting Style.
